Anesthesia Awareness Campaign

The mission of the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign is "to prevent patients (even one) from experiencing anesthesia awareness and its consequences through education, prevention, and empowerment by replacing ignorance or fear with knowledge."

Anesthesia awareness is the phenomenon of being mentally alert (and terrified) while supposedly under full general anesthesia. The patient is paralyzed, unable to speak, and totally helpless to communicate his/her awareness. Since 1998, the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign has been educating and advocating for the prevention of anesthesia awareness and supporting victims.

Anesthesia Awareness Latest Developments

The Anesthesia Awareness Campaign, along with other professional societies, victims, and awareness-oriented organizations, will be filmed by a TV crew from South Korea for a documentary on awareness the week of May 19. This is a part of the world we have not yet been able to reach!

May 1, 2008 After a few difficult months physically, I am ready to get back to the important work of the Anesthesia Awareness Campaign:

  1. Serving as a touchstone to victims;
  2. Working hard to change the ways anesthesia is administered and to enlighten all anesthesia providers about awareness and to have them embrace the most patient-oriented practices;
  3. To enlighten and empower the public about awareness and how best to protect themselves from being victims;
  4. (newly added as a specific goal) TO WORK TOWARD MAKING THE USE OF BRAIN ACTIVITY MONITORING A STANDARD OF CARE IN EVERY SITE WHERE GENERAL ANESTHESIA IS USED.

NOW! I’d also like to recommend two new books:

Before You Go Under, A step-by-step guide to ease your mind before going under anesthesia; by Benjamin Taimoorazy, M.D., AccuPress, 309-660-2976, February 2008. 195 pp.

The Anesthesia Awareness Campaign receives many, many requests from all types of media to talk to victims in specific geographic areas. It has been a number of years since my list of “willing interviewees” has been updated. If you would be willing to talk to the media about your awareness experience and how it has affected your life, please let me know – provide all of your contact information. If you are currently on the list, please let me know of your up-to-date contact information and your wishes about remaining on the list or not.
